The Adult Learning Center (ALC) is designed to provide “big picture” handles for people to better understand the Bible and the faith and how to live them out in our world. It does this by providing systematic instruction in biblical, theological, and Christian living subjects that we believe are foundationally important for people if they are to have a life-changing relationship with Christ and become equipped to be effective servants in His kingdom. Each course will challenge participants to follow Jesus by (1) growing more deeply in their relationship with Christ (i.e., loving God), and (2) serving in His kingdom (i.e., loving others).

Unless otherwise specified, the Adult Learning Center (ALC) meets each Sunday morning at 10:45 in classrooms downstairs.

ALC Tracks

Most of the classes (not including occasional electives) will be offered through two different tracks:
Track 1: The Foundation Series
Track 2: The Core Curriculum
Each track has the same biblical, theological, and Christian living categories (see below), but Track 1 will assume no prior knowledge of these subjects, while Track 2 will build on the knowledge that the participants already have. The first track will lay a broad foundation for the Bible, our beliefs, and the Christian life, and thereby “feed into” the second track, where these subjects will be addressed in more depth.

See the specific courses for each track.

Course Categories

Courses will be taught in three general categories:
  1. Biblical Studies. A series of courses that together will survey the entire Bible is the foundation of the ALC curriculum. These courses are not designed to be “in-depth” studies of the books of the Bible. Rather, they are designed to (1) survey the content of a book or section of Scripture, (2) demonstrate how the book/section under consideration fits with what comes before and after in the Bible, (3) demonstrate how the book/section contributes to our understanding of the gospel through the person and work of Christ, and (4) in light of the gospel, how it is relevant for our lives today. Participants will come away with a knowledge of the storyline of the Bible, as well as the tools for interpreting and applying the Scriptures on their own.

  2. Theological Studies. A series of courses will be taught that survey the doctrinal distinctives of the Presbyterian, Reformed, evangelical heritage. These courses will not be “ivory tower” doctrinal theory. Rather, theology, properly understood, is the application of the Word of God to life. In doing theology, we ask specific questions of the Bible and seek to live faithfully in light of the Bible”s teaching on these subjects.

  3. Christian Living Topics. Supplementing this foundation of biblical and theological surveys will be a series of courses on various topics that we consider to be critically important for living the Christian life in today's culture.
Through this approach, the ALC complements teaching received in other forums (e.g., small group Bible studies, sermons, radio, etc.). The nature of teaching in these other forums is less systematic or far-reaching as that envisioned for the ALC. Furthermore, those studies are typically either more (1) topical or (2) in-depth. As such, the ALC complements them by providing the larger, foundational context for understanding the topic and details of a more in-depth study. In other words, participation in the ALC will equip you to get more out of the teaching you receive in any other forum.

Vision for the ALC

Participation in the ALC is not an end in itself—we are not satisfied with adults merely gaining increased knowledge of the Bible and theology; rather, it is the means to the end: equipping people with the knowledge and motivation to follow Jesus by loving God and others.

It is our vision that through consistent participation in the ALC, an increasing number of adults will grow in spiritual maturity and involvement in Kingdom mission. This will be manifested as they:
  • Deal with God, not simply keep busy in religious activities. The gospel will become more central to their lives.
  • Are equipped to read, study, and apply the Bible for themselves.
  • Increasingly live lives to the glory of God and the extension of His kingdom in their spheres of influence (families, neighborhoods, work, etc.).
  • Connect with the community life of the church.
  • Identify and express their spiritual gifts in service to the church and the world.

We hope you can join us!
